Grab bars are the last five percent. Most of the safety in a good renovation is invisible — it's in the layout, the floor, the light, and what goes inside the walls.

A new bathroom is a real improvement. But if getting to it means a dark hallway and a switch at the wrong end, the risk hasn't moved far.
We look at the route, not just the room — then tell you what matters most and what can wait. Sometimes the honest answer is that better lighting beats a new bathroom this year. We'd rather say that than sell you the bathroom.

Two tax credits you may be able to claim
Home Accessibility Tax Credit
up to $3,000
If you're 65 or older, or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit: 15% of up to $20,000 a year on permanent changes that improve access or reduce injury risk — walk-in showers, grab bars, ramps, widened doorways, stair lifts. A spouse or supporting family member can claim it for you.
Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit
up to $7,500
For building a self-contained suite so a parent 65 or older can live with you: 15% of up to $50,000. Refundable — you get it whether or not you owe tax. The suite needs its own entrance, kitchen and bathroom, and has to meet permits and code.
