What actually makes a home safer
Most safety comes from the layout, the floors, the lighting, and what is inside the walls. It rarely comes from a grab bar alone.
Bathroom
A shower with no step. Extra wood support inside the walls, so grab bars can be added later. Slip-resistant tile. A bench. Lever taps.
Main floor living
A bedroom on the main floor. A full bathroom on the main floor, if there is not one. Laundry moved up from the basement.
Entrances and stairs
Step-free ways into the home. Handrails on both sides of the stairs. Good light at every door. Door handles that are easy to use.
Light and visibility
Light on the ceiling, at the counters, and low on the wall. A lit path from the bedroom to the bathroom. Switches at both ends of the hall. Stair edges and counter edges that are easy to see.
Kitchen
Drawers instead of low cupboards. Keep the things you use most between hip and shoulder height. Wall ovens and a raised dishwasher. Light over the counters.
One safe room is not enough
A new bathroom helps. But if the way to it is dark, or the switch is in the wrong place, the risk barely changes.
We look at the whole route first. Then we tell you what matters most and what can wait. Sometimes better lighting is a smarter first step than a new bathroom.

Making room for a parent
When a parent moves in, the house has to work in a new way. Some families need a private suite with its own entrance, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.
It can go in the basement, on the main floor, or in an addition. A suite has to meet the local rules for a second unit. We check this before we design anything.
Two tax credits you may be able to claim
Home Accessibility Tax Credit
up to $20,000
For people who are 65 or older, or who can claim the Disability Tax Credit.
Up to $20,000 of costs each year can count toward the credit. Walk-in showers, grab bars, ramps, wider doorways, and stair lifts are examples. It lowers the tax you owe. A spouse or family member who helps may be able to claim it.
Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit
up to $50,000
For building a self-contained suite for a parent who is 65 or older, or for an adult who can claim the Disability Tax Credit.
The suite needs its own entrance, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area, and it must meet local rules. Up to $50,000 of costs can count. This credit is refundable. Only one qualifying renovation can be claimed for each person for their whole life.

Did you know?
Changing a tub to a walk-in shower does not require a city permit
But plumbing and electrical work can still need their own permit or inspection. We check what your project needs at your first visit and handle the paperwork for you.
